The Devil's Dictionary (2.0): XML
The Devil's Dictionary (2.0): XML bestows upon us it's wisdom:
XML,
nounA magic elixir of legend, claiming to solve all problems while inevitably exacting an ironic cost.
“Once we drink the XML and take care of a few minor things — parser, DTD, entification, well-formed-ness, validation, namespaces, I18N, XSL transformations, schemas — all will be peaceful in the kingdom!”
LazyWeb suggestion #1
LazyWeb may have trouble finding this, since there's no Trackback on Blogger, but I'll jot it down here anyway:
One thing I've always enjoyed about the web is the ability to hide little "easter eggs" in a page. It's always exicting when you find neat little bits of functionality or content that most people aren't aware of, and with the web - it's super easy!
Try including content inside the
title attribute of a link/anchor tag, and suddenly, it's a
hovering hypernote! It's a link which may or may not go anywhere, but contains a tad more information than was there before.
It's an essential part of valid and accessible HTML coding when you're using the same text for two links that have different destinations, but can also be fun for users who like to read with their mouse along with their eyes.
So what am I asking for on the LazyWeb? I think that if bloging software can give me a little "insert link" widget that accepts a URL, then it can give me the same widget with space for a URL -or- a title, and a target! Anything that makes it easier to code blogs enriches the content of blogs, no?
Well, within limits I suppose. But this is definately within acceptable limits.
Fairvue Central >>Third Annual Weblog Awards
Fairvue Central >> Features >> Third Annual Weblog Awards could be just another example of blog-stroking-bloggers hyping their own interests, or it could be
the greatest idea since buttering both sides of the bread!!.
Or it could fall in between somewhere - which is more likely. I'm just happy that it's turned me on to the
Windy City Webloggers: Chicago Blogs Webring. It's all about the community, and it seems that I actually have one.
Be damned my "friends and family", and MCI can take their "neighborhood" and stuff it up their... um - nm.

This is an excellent example of why we all need moblogs. To capture something like this would really tickle my techy-bone. I can't even begin to count the number of times (i.e.
Aug 28, 1990 - Plainfield IL) that I would've like to document some patch of my past for the sake of my own personal sense of posterity. Isn't that why we all started taking pictures in the first place?
TheFeature :: mobile is the new media
TheFeature :: It's All About The Mobile Internet has a Weekly Wrap: The Heat Wave Continues article (sign up required), but I'll share a bit of their content here just because of how stunning it was to me:
Finally this week, further proof that mobile is the new new media: Mobile ringtones are expected to outsell CD singles this year in the UK. Industry watchers expect GBP 70 million worth of ringtones to be purchased in the country this year, while sales of CD singles are already off 37% from last year, when they totaled GBP 97 million. But while the record companies cry about the bottom falling out of the singles market thanks to mp3s, the ringtones sales figures are good news, as the tones can actually be more profitable than the CDs. Watch as the cycle comes full-circle, with CD singles counting on included mobile content like ringtones, graphics, and screensavers to drive sales.
This takes the concept of working your market just a bit further - handset manufacturers that are on their game will be engineering models a generation beyond simple polyphony, into real-time media playback, mp3 or whatever. Would record companies take note? This is a major distribution channel for something beyond just publishing royalties, give the kids the sounds they crave!
What if your ring tone wasn't just a fancy MIDI file, but instead a custom-remix of your favorite hot tracks, fresh off the producer's desk? Now that would be something... You'd have a hardware lock on the content, it could be set up with expiration dates, you'd partner directly with the carriers for distribution, everyone would win!
Wired 11.05 UNWIRED: Beyond Wi-Fi
While it seems funny to me that a magazine called WIRED, would devote as much time as it does addressing topics
Wired 11.05 UNWIRED: Beyond Wi-Fi, I have to admit - I'm glad that they do!
Plus, I'm delighted to have stumbled upon
xeni.jardin today as a real pioneer in the blogosphere and digital revolution. Keep an eye on this one, she's a real firecracker. Here's what she had to say about one of my major interests:
Wireless Personal Area Networks
This short-range technology lets everyone have their own little local wireless network. Within a personal bubble of operating space, PCs, PDAs, mobile phones, and digital music players detect one another and interact. Defined by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers as a zone of at least 10 meters (32.81 feet) around a person, WPANs could forever eliminate snarls of cable and wire that booby-trap homes and offices. In their place: wearable, smart computing devices that converse on the fly, as well as new mobile digital payment systems and personal security technologies.
Devices within a WPAN create a flow of machine-to-machine communication that personalizes services spontaneously. But managing device interoperability, maintaining always-on connectivity between machines, and ensuring that personal information stays safely inside users' bubbles won't be easy. General Atomics, IBM, and Philips are among the tech titans said to be exploring WPANs. Watch for these networks to proliferate within two to five years.
Mobloging
First in a series, this is the inaugural mobile entry into the weblog here. Let's get this party started!
